Strength At Any Angle – Yoga Asanas

You have just pulled up in your driveway, exited your car and grabbed several shopping bags out of the boot. You then realise that there is one more bag on the floor in the back seat on the passenger side. It’s hard to reach from the driver’s side and you find yourself contorting into an awkward position as you try to grab the handle with your fingertips, without letting go of the several shopping bags you are already holding.

  • Do you have the flexibility to reach that one extra bag?
  • Will you maintain your balance?
  • Do you have the strength to lift the bag at such an awkward angle?

If you practice yoga asanas, the answer to these questions might be yes.

It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch (pun intended) to say that we would all like a little bit more comfort in our bodies whilst sitting quietly and undertaking our daily activities (such as grabbing the shopping out of the car).

The original purpose of yoga asanas was exactly that; to provide comfort, so the body did not cause agitation to the self while undertaking a seated meditation processes for large periods of time.

The word Yoga can be translated to the English word yoke, which means union. This is the union between the eternal spiritual individual living entity (atma) and the Supreme Soul (Paramatma).

This union can still be achieved but not by sitting for large periods of time as we are heavily distracted in this day and age.

As far as Asanas are concerned, whether you can make it to a class or develop a short daily routine at home, they can provide you with many physical benefits including but not limited to:

Improved Muscular Strength

  • A common misconception of practising yoga asanas might be that it makes the body overly flexible and unstable resulting in a lack of strength but even some of the most basic poses can increase stability and strength.

Improved Muscular Flexibility

  • Having greater flexibility can allow the body to sit, bend and contort into a large range of positions without having to apply excessive force and risk straining the stiffest parts of the body.

Improved Balance

  • There are many yoga poses that are highly challenging and whether practicing a static pose or a dynamic sequence, a large amount of balance is required.

Three standing poses that can help to improve your strength, flexibility and balance are:

Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I)

  • Promotes deep breathing.
  • Strengthens shoulders and upper body.
  • Helps relieve tension in neck and lower back.
  • Strengthens and stretches lower body.

    • Strengthens legs, shoulders and ankles.
    • Can help increase stamina.

    Warrior III (Virabhadrasana III)

    • Can help improve leg strength and flexibility.
    • Improves balance.
    • Improves strength of posterior chain.

    Yoga asanas provide many benefits from higher energy levels, improved sleep, to increased strength, balance, flexibility and more. Yoga is a large subject matter and this is not even the tip of the iceberg!
