The School Gym Fit Out: Stronger Students, Better Learning

What a well planned gym does for students, and how we work with GrowthED to make sure the space gets utilised to fullest potential

Stronger Students & Better Learning with GrowthED

More schools are asking us the same question. We have the space and the budget, so what should actually go in it? Behind that question sits a bigger one about what the school wants the space to achieve: athletic performance, student wellbeing, staff use, community access, or all four. This blog walks through the benefits schools report after a fit out, what a well specified gym includes, and how we work alongside Growth ED to make sure the space changes practice and not just the floor plan.

Why Schools Do It

1

A gym built for the whole school

A school gym should be more than a space reserved for the strongest athletes.

Used properly, it can support PE lessons, sports teams, strength and conditioning, staff wellbeing and supervised student sessions. This means the facility can benefit a much wider section of the school community.

Not every student will make the first team, but every student can benefit from learning to move well, exercise safely and understand the basics of strength and fitness.

2

Build strong foundations early

The teenage years are an important time to develop physical literacy and establish good movement habits.

A properly designed school gym gives students the opportunity to learn fundamental movements such as squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, jumping and landing in a controlled environment.

With appropriate supervision and age-appropriate programming, resistance training can help students become stronger, more capable and more confident in how they move.

3

Exercise as an outlet for wellbeing

School life can be demanding, with students balancing academic pressure, social relationships, exams and the challenges of adolescence.

Exercise provides a positive outlet. Regular physical activity can support mental wellbeing, reduce stress and contribute to better sleep and overall mood.

Having a gym on campus also removes barriers to exercise. There is no membership to arrange, travel required or unfamiliar commercial gym environment to navigate.

4

Exercise can support learning

The benefits of physical activity don't stop when the session finishes.

Regular physical activity is associated with benefits including improved attention, mood and executive function, making it relevant far beyond PE and sport.

A school gym can support a broader approach to wellbeing and learning, giving students another opportunity to move, develop self-discipline and manage their energy and focus throughout the school day.

5

Building lifelong exercise habits

One of the most valuable things a school can give a student is something they can take with them when they leave.

Teaching young people how to exercise safely and confidently can help remove some of the uncertainty around physical activity later in life. They can leave school understanding how to structure a basic workout, use equipment correctly and train with good technique.

The goal is to build knowledge and confidence that can support an active lifestyle long after graduation.

6

An investment families can see

The gym can also play an important role in how a school presents itself.

When prospective families visit a school, they see the facilities first-hand. A modern, well-maintained gym demonstrates that the school takes physical development, sport and student wellbeing seriously.

Just as importantly, a gym that is visibly being used shows that it is part of everyday school life, rather than simply a facility for display.

In partnership with GrowthED

The gyms that fail are rarely the ones with the wrong equipment. They fail because nobody owns the program and nobody measures the impact. That is why we work with Growth ED.

Their professional learning and coaching model, built on Visible Learning research and delivered by CEO Sean Watt and his team, gives schools a way to set goals, build staff capability, and see what the space is actually doing for students.

Specifying the space and the equipment

We start with the space, not the catalogue. Using the dimensions, layout and requirements provided by the school, we digitally create the proposed gym and plan the equipment around how the facility will actually be used.

Ceiling height, flooring, power, storage, traffic flow and available space all help shape the design. We can then visualise equipment placement, training zones and the overall layout in 3D, giving the school a clear picture of the finished facility before anything is purchased.

This approach helps ensure the space works properly, looks right and makes the most of every square metre.
